Prison Island

Prison Island lies about 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town. It was originally used as a prison for rebellious slaves and later the prison was transformed into a hospital to serve as quarantine for sufferers of yellow fever. Nowadays Prison Island is home to an endangered species of tortoises. These majestic creatures, weighing in at an average of 200kg and some even older than 100 years, are the current inhabitants of the island and are a sight to see!

From Mahali our driver will take you on the scenic trip down to Stone Town where he will introduce you to the captain who will take you to Prison Island.
